A Full-Circle Legacy: David Walden Gives Decades of Dedication to Education and Local Athletics

When David Walden graduated from Edinburgh High School in 1979, he carried with him more than just a diploma. He took a philosophy of involvement, one that would eventually lead him back to the same halls where his journey began. After a distinguished 40-year career in education and athletics, Walden concluded a decade-long tenure as the Edinburgh Athletic Director in 2023, marking the end of a true full-circle story.

Walden’s roots in Edinburgh run deep. The son of Bud and Gloria Walden, David grew up in a household where service to the school corporation was a family tradition; his mother, Gloria, served for many years as the school’s ECA Treasurer.

As a student, Walden was the embodiment of a "well-rounded" Lancer. He was a three-sport athlete competing in football, basketball, and track while simultaneously finding his rhythm in the Lancer Band and the "Conquistadors" Stage Band. These experiences, he says, were instrumental in his development.

"It gave me an opportunity to participate in many activities which developed and shaped me," Walden recalled. Among his fondest memories remains touring each spring with the Stage Band and Show Choir, the Stage Band’s "Superior Rating" during his senior year, and the mentorship of his favorite teacher, Mrs. Hightshue.

After graduation from Edinburgh, he received his Bachelor of Science in Teacher Education with concentrations in Business Education, Accounting, and Clerical studies from Ball State University and received his Master’s in Education from Butler University.  Walden spent 30 years teaching and coaching at Greenwood Community High School. His coaching resume at Greenwood reads like a record book: 21 years coaching basketball, 5 years coaching football, and 10 years leading track and field, securing five county and three conference championships.

Before returning to his alma mater, Walden served as the Assistant Athletic Director at Greenwood, preparing him for the final chapter of his career.

In 2013, Walden came home to Edinburgh and accepted the position of Athletic Director at the Edinburgh Community School Corporation, a role he held until 2023. His tenure was defined by a tireless work ethic.  He was a fixture at the school on weekends and late evenings, meticulously preparing facilities for the coming week's games.

His efforts did not go unnoticed. Referees and umpires frequently recognized Walden for his hospitality, noting that he made Edinburgh a premier destination for officials. Colleagues, including former ECA treasurers, praised his leadership and the positive environment he fostered within the department.

An avid Butler University fan and a proud grandfather of eight, Walden leaves behind a legacy of community connection. When asked what wisdom he would leave for the current students walking the halls of Edinburgh, his answer was simple and reflective of the life he has led:

"The best advice I would give is to get involved in as many activities as you can and expand your horizons."

As David Walden enjoys his retirement with his wife, Michelle, the "rounded student" from the Class of '79 leaves the Lancer athletic program in a better place than he found it, a testament to a lifetime spent in the service of education and local sports.
