ECEF Awards Grant to Stephen Cox

Stephen Cox, a history teacher at Edinburgh Community Schools, has been awarded a $1,200.00 grant from the Edinburgh Community Education Foundation (ECEF). The funds were used to purchase WWII: Voices of Service, a comprehensive educational resource designed to immerse students, particularly those in his dual credit history courses, in the personal narratives of the Second World War.

Unlike a traditional textbook, Voices of Service utilizes primary sources such as letters, oral histories, and photographs.  Also included are historical artifacts in reproductions of Executive Orders, posters, and newspaper clippings, along with human perspectives in stories from both the battlefield and the home front.

"You can't really know where you're going until you know where you've been," Mr. Cox noted, quoting Dr. Maya Angelou. "It is amazing to me when students make a connection from the past to the present.  The technology and surroundings may be different, but we are inherently the same."

Mr. Cox’s passion for the subject is personal; his grandfather was a WWII Army veteran who earned a Purple Heart in France. With an extensive academic background including degrees from Kent State and Kentucky Christian University, and ongoing graduate work at Indiana University.  Mr. Cox is dedicated to showing students both "the best and worst of humanity."

Beyond his standard history curriculum, Mr. Cox teaches two Dual Credit classes in U.S. History (H105 & H106 from Indiana University).  Edinburgh currently offers a robust selection of Dual Credit and AP classes in math, English, art, and history, providing students the invaluable opportunity to graduate with college credits already on their transcripts.
